Understanding the techniques of watering plants

Golden rules and techniques of watering plants

Water is one of the most important elements any living thing needs to survive and plants are no different. One of the main reasons most plants die in pots and containers is either too much water or too little water. Initially,  when I had started gardening, I wasn’t sure about how much water to pour, what time is best to pour water and which plants need how much water. Even if you are a seasoned gardener, you may kill the plants with too much or too little water. Here is this post I am going to be sharing my experience and helping you understand the techniques of watering plants.

techniques of watering plants

In order to ensure that plants in your pots and planters are getting enough water then remove the top layer of compost and check if it’s moist.

Here are few tips for understanding the techniques of watering plants.

So, let’s begin with when is the best time to water plants?

  •  Plants use water and carbon dioxide for the process of photosynthesis that happens during daylight. Daytime is the best time to water plants.  When you water the plants in the morning or daytime it can use the moisture for the rest of the day.
  • During the summer seasons if in case your plants get direct sunlight you may have to water the plants twice as well. Especially flowering plants need a good amount of water in summers.techniques of watering plants
  • Do not water late in the night as it won’t give your plants the chance to use this water until the next day and they will sit in water which may also cause root rot.
  • Always water the plant at their base as if you water the plant on their leaves, it will cause the sunlight to magnify the water droplets on the leaf and burn them. Trust me this was new for me as well.
  • Winters call for less watering as the plant’s moisture doesn’t dry up soon and thus it can cause plants to die if overwatered.
  • Keep the leaves of plants dry to avoid diseases. I have killed my hibiscus due to spraying too much water on its leaves. So, I can vouch for this technique as I used it the second time around.
  • Do not stick to the same time, same day for watering plant always as it will do worse than good for your plant. Just check the soil and if it’s up to 2 inches dry upon touch then go ahead and water it. Just stick to your instincts and care.

Next in line is watering a different kind of soilstechniques of watering plants

  • Plants grown in sandy soil will need less water. For example, succulents, cactus, the ones in your Terrarium, and the likes of it
  • A plant that grows in heavy clay kind of soil needs to be water less often but whenever you water them you got to pour a little more water to them. This goes for most of the house plants so water carefully.

Also sharing some of my own secrets that have helped me always

  • Always ensure you water the pot after repotting
  • Plants that are in the large posts do not dry up very quickly in comparison to smaller ones. So, water carefully
  • Humid air keeps the soil moist for longer than dry air. So, if you may want to use a humidifier in your house to maintain the humidity.

So, these are some of the tips and tricks I have learned regarding watering. Most of the common house plants would love frequent watering but there are exceptions as well. So, depending on your plant’s tendency you could water it accordingly. Hope you also liked these techniques of the watering plant. Keep good watering tools so that they help in efficient watering of the plants.

Thats a very important point when it comes to gardening. Not watering them at night makes complete sense. I have seen many watering the plants at night thinking that since there is no sunlight , so the plants will not get dry. Luckily Houston has a humid weather and some experienced garners say that the soil is ideal for farming.

Magnify the water droplets. Wow. Also new to me. I have to send this to my father in law. He spends his time at home watering the plants day and evening and it’s only a matter of time until another plant dies. Now they are flourishing but some don’t need to be swimming in water.
