Top 7 Tips by Dr. Shelton Zenith Labs to Ensure Good Health During a Pandemic

The current situation with the global pandemic has proved to be the real tests of our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Most of the time we are worried about ensuring strong immunity from within to lessen our chances of contracting COVID. In my recent consultation with our family doctor, I had so many questions on how to improve immunity, and what kinds of food we must consume, or what kind of supplements will boost our health from within. That’s when I came across some very nice and helpful tips by Dr. Shelton Zenith Labs on ways to ensure good health during the pandemic.

While the pandemic continues to affect everyday life, we must eat a nourished and balanced diet and have a healthy approach towards our food. People suffering from chronic illness or comorbidities need to follow certain dietary needs as per the suggestion from their medical practitioner. As directed by the World Health Organization one must eat a variety of fresh and unprocessed foods every day to get the vitamins, minerals, dietary fibres, antioxidants, and proteins that our bodies need.

Below are the top 7 tips by Dr. Shelton Zenith Labs to safeguard our health during a pandemic:

1.Stay Hydrated- Good hydration is imperative to ensure good health. Having a minimum of 5 litres a day is good enough to stay hydrated and consume zero calories.

2.Eat a home-cooked meal- Given the current situation, it’s advisable to have home-cooked meals as much as possible. Healthy meals consist of vegetables, whole grains, and fresh fruits. Have a combination of all these in a balanced manner during the day to reap more benefits.

3.Cut down on sugar intake- We all have heard of covid-19 complications in patients suffering from diabetes. Thus, it is better to limit the sugar intake. Avoid sugary and aerated drinks. Try and choose fresh fruits over sweet snacks like cakes, chocolates, and cookies. Also, reduce consumption of fruits with high content of natural sugar like grapes, sapota, pineapple, sugarcane, mango, etc.

4.Reduce saturated fats- To boost internal health, avoid saturated fats and replace them with oils that are rich in healthier fats. You could opt for oils like olive, sunflower, or corn oil for everyday cooking. Avoiding processed food like fast food, fried food, frozen pizza, cookies and spread will be of great help.

5.Avoid alcohol and smoking- Alcohol and smoking are not part of a healthy lifestyle. So, it’s better if you can avoid this completely or, at the very least, do it in moderate quantities.

6.Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables- Do your best to eat nourishing meals, like those rich in fruits and vegetables. Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables takes care of vitamins and minerals required by the body.

7.Nuts & dry snacks– Since the entire family is staying in the house the whole day, intermittent snacking is normal. Instead of consuming sugar-based snacks, opt for healthier options like nuts, yoghurt, cheese, dried fruits, eggs, or any other homemade healthy options. These food items are healthy, filling and helps build healthy eating habits and immunity in the long run as well.

Make cooking a family affair at your home to make it fun-filled and easy to cook and enjoy. Cooking and eating together healthy meals are good for your routine, strengthen family bonds and have fun too. Try and have fixed mealtimes as a family. Such structures and routines can help reduce anxiety for the family and children, especially in these stressful situations.

In addition to maintaining good nutrition and eating habits, it’s also important to take care of other lifestyle measures to lead a healthy life. Include regular exercise, adequate sleep, avoid smoking or consuming alcohol, and try to minimize stress. Finally, what you eat is as important as how much you eat. Try to satisfy your hunger and cravings with small portions of what you want. Balance is the key to a nutritious diet.

Try and use these healthy & nutritious eating tips from Dr. Shelton of Zenith Labs to keep your waistline in check, so that your work clothes will still fit when you finally change out of your pyjamas and head back to the office!

Eating home-cooked meals, keeping a close watch on our food habits, increased importance of exercising, sleep has again becoming an integral part of our routine.
