Vegetable gardening- A step wise ultimate guide for beginners

With the fast-paced life and various lifestyle diseases suffered by the urban population, organic vegetables have found a new place on supermarket grocery shelves. Aside from the lifestyle diseases and lifestyle issues people are also opting for organic vegetables as they are grown naturally. No chemicals and fertilizers are used to produce organic vegetables. However, for the purity offered by the farmers in organic vegetables, they automatically become expensive too. So how about growing these fresh and organic vegetables in your own garden and enjoying the freshness all year round. In this post, I will be sharing some great tips and tricks on how to do vegetable gardening.

Vegetable gardening

Currently, the whole world is grappling through the pandemic and is locked inside the house. To refresh your mood and also be able to eat fresh produce, growing them at home is a great option. And trust me you do not need much to grow your own garden. If you are in a rented set up still you can manage to grow few things. I am sharing all the details below.

Vegetable gardening

Things required for vegetable gardening

  • Right location with bright sunlight. At least 6-8 hours of bright sunlight is needed
  • Growth bags (If you have a huge space and permanent set up you can have huge planters also for this. But growth bags are really great options)
  • Mud beds- If you have ample space and look to grow your garden on the terrace, you can get mud beds made especially for the vegetable garden. This will give ample space to grow the crops well.
  • Nutrient-rich soil- The soil should be able to drain well, too moist and wet soil won’t help the plant to grow
  • Good quality organic fertilizer- Plants do need additional support to grow well so ensure that you fertilize the soil and make it rich in nutrition.
  • Best quality seeds (You can buy online or also from your nearby nursery). High-quality seeds will ensure that the product is good too. Seed packets are less expensive than individual plants, but if seeds don’t germinate, your money—and time—are wasted.

Easy to grow vegetables at home

Since you are a beginner, you should start with few plants only instead of potting too many and not be able to manage it. Pick 3-5 of your family’s favorite vegetables and start with them.

  • Tomatoes
  • Okra
  • Green chilies
  • Spinach
  • Coriander
  • Mint
  • Bottle Gourd
  • Peas
  • Green beans

These are some of the vegetables that are easy to grow and can be managed well at home. Do make sure that you have a small herb garden within your vegetable garden. They come in quite handy. Especially coriander, mint, lemongrass is some of the favorite ingredients in Indian household. Also, homegrown herbs are less expensive in comparison to those available at your nearby grocery store. So, you know it’s a hit.

Container vegetable gardening

Every vegetable has a season in which they grow and their favorable temperature as well. So, you must do a little bit of web search before sowing the seeds or even the smaller baby plants. Vegetable gardening is like therapy and it gives immense happiness when you see those baby plants come alive and your efforts paying off well. Hope this post was useful for you as a beginner. In my subsequent post, I will share details on the top 5 vegetables that we can grow at home and step by step guide for individual vegetables. So, stay tuned for the post to come.
