Hair Care in Pregnancy: Treatment, Causes, and What to Expect

Pregnancy will bring many changes to the body. The changes will reflect within the body and in your hair too. Because of the changing hormones, hair fall is quite common after delivery. And even during those 9 months, be prepared to face anomalous behavior from your hair! But don’t worry as we have got an answer to this.
Hair care in pregnancyBut before we dive into the remedies to tackle hair woes, let us first allow us to take a glance at the changes your hair will undergo during pregnancy and what exactly causes these changes.

What to expect during pregnancy?

Hair growth occurs in three phases – active, resting, and shredding. People usually shed about 100 strands of hair on a daily basis. But during pregnancy, the changing hormones interfere with the hair cycle. Due to this, it takes almost 9-12 months for the hair growth cycle to return to its normal state. The abnormalities in hormones are different in numerous women. This can cause dryness together with weakness in the hair roots which results in pregnancy hair loss. Some hormones may alter the form of the hair follicle, thus many ladies say that their hair has become more or sometimes less curly during or after pregnancy.

Main causes of hair fall during pregnancy

  1. Poor nutrition- If the nutrition isn’t in adequate amounts, then it will cause weakness in the body together with causing hair loss troubles. The most common cause of hair fall is due to iron deficiency along with the lack of vitamins and minerals at the time of pregnancy.
  2. The problem of stress- Pregnancy plays a major role in the areas of mental along with emotional wellness. Stress, which is combined with fear along with nervousness, will cause thinning along with hair fall.
  3. Medication and poor health- Poor health conditions like diabetes can easily lead to hair loss. If women are taking medications for blood pressure or depression, then the chances of hair fall get enhanced.
  4. Infections and allergies- Hair loss in women during pregnancy are due to different kinds of allergies and infections that most of the women face due to different kinds of medicines.
  5. Haircare products – Poor quality of hair products can create different kinds of problems. Avoid shampoos and hair conditioners that contain harmful chemicals as they will definitely cause hair loss. Rather, you should pick herbal hair care products as they cause no side effects and render thickness, shine, and luster to your manes and contribute to the overall hair growth.

Remedies for Hair fall during Pregnancy

  1. Massage scalp on a regular basis- It is important for pregnant women that they should massage their scalp on a regular basis. It will help in stimulating the blood circulation along with minerals of the oil seeps deep into the layers of the class. It will provide nourishment to the hair follicles.
  2. Balanced diet– Pregnant women should consume a diet, which is full of minerals along with proteins, and vitamins that will provide important nutrients to the body and boost hair health. It is important for the person that they should drink more fluids which in turn helps in removing out the toxins from the body along with consuming fresh fruits along with vegetables. These are rich in antioxidants along with minerals and vitamins.
  3. Home remedies- Pregnant women can try out some remedies to get rid of hair-related problems. Rather than using an anti-dandruff shampoo, you can try a hair mask of curd and fenugreek seed paste. Another home remedy is applying aloe vera gel mixed with lemon juice. This will nurture the hair follicles and provide nourishment to the hair.

  1. Hairstyling tips- It is important for pregnant women that they avoid hair styling and hair straightening products. They should comb the hair and avoid combing when it is wet, this will lead to more hair loss.

Take part in activities that can help you relax. Light up aromatic candles, listen to soothing music, practice yoga, and go for a relaxing head massage to destress yourself. Eat right, sleep well, and avoid stress – this mantra will give your luscious long mane during your pregnancy as well as keep you and your baby hail and healthy.
