Sounds that conjure up my childhood the best

Childhood- this mere word throws us back into nostalgia. If you were born in the ’80s, you know how blissful things were during those times. For the 80-s born folks, it was the golden era of their life.

More often than not we come across things as we grow that reminds or reconnects us to the beautiful childhood we lived. We often forget about those everyday things that always seemed to be around when we were a kid.

Whether it was the jingling of mum’s bangles, that all-time favorite ad on television to the kulfi vendor who would shout his throat out to get the attention of we kid. These random things are sure to bring back memories of a time that lives forever in our minds.

Now that I have grown up and am a mother of two adorable kids, I often spend time walking down the memory lane and thinking of those beautiful days of my childhood. Putting across some of those beautiful sounds that conjure up my childhood the best.

Ice-Cream vendor- The full-throated call of the ice-cream vendor which takes me back to my childhood and the lazy summer afternoons we used to spend at our grandmothers’ house. I still clearly remember the hot afternoons when the entire household would be asleep post-lunch and we cousins would just wait for the Kulfiwala to come. And that’s when we would request our Dadaji to give 5 Rs in all as in 50 paise we would get one kulfi and 5 Rs was enough for us to buy kulfis for all.Childhood Ringing Bells- My friends used to often come on their bicycles and would ring the bells in front of my home to call me down. We had a pre-decided tone of the bells to call each other down. It was really fun to roam around in our colony on cycles and ringing the same tone together. It was fun indeed for us but irritation for many other 😊ChildhoodMalgudi Days- The title track of Malgudi days on Doordarshan was so pleasant. For us, it meant the happy start of the weekend. Well, back then we didn’t know there would be a concept called weekends in our future. We were most happy on Sundays as our days would be chalked out so well from Ramayan, Mahabharata, Shree Krishna to Malgudi Days. Well, for those wondering right now how much did we watch TV, so let me tell you Sunday was in true sense fun day for us as that’s the only day we got any kind of screen time.

ChildhoodGrandfathers rocking chair- It was my grandfather’s most favorite priced possession. Yes, his rocking chair would make a creaking sound every time he sat on it and rocked. He used to sit on his rocking chair and would often read some great stories written by some famous Hindi writers of that time. And that’s how I got my interest picked in Hindi literature and went on to read many books from Premchand Munshi, Dharamveer Bharti, and many more.

Here’s yet another amazing post on Childhood of the ’80s and 90’s Click HERE

Sound of the train- We used to live near a railway track for a long time and got so used to the trains passing by. The engine honking loudly and that beautiful thought of yet another journey that many people would take in that train. And till date, I love the sound of the train and the weird/distinct smell that you can feel on the railway’s station. Mums glass bangles- The most beautiful sound of all that reminds me of my childhood is that of glass bangles. The sweet tinkling sound of my mother’s glass bangles when she rhythmically patted my back to put me to bed. Every time she would do my hair, dress me up, feed me those ghee parathas, or even run behind me to beat with whatever came in her hand. And every time her bangles would make that beautiful sound. Now that I don’t have her with me anymore, I miss this sound the most.

Childhood

If you’re anything like me, you miss all the great stuff that you had as a child. Life back then was simple yet so much fun. All these and there are so many more sounds that make me miss my childhood more. Do share with me things that remind you of your beautiful childhood.

This made me feel nostalgic too! Sounds of cheering when India won a match, Doordarshan’s tune, Nani’s lullabies, and so many more. Childhood was indeed filled with some beautiful sounds.

Indeed the 80’s child saw the world so differently. The ice cream vendor and the kulfi vendor would remain my favourite…why aren’t they around now with the ringing bells? Thank you for bringing back those wonderful moments from childhood!

Nostalgic written allover this post. There are so many sounds that take us back to the 80s. I love the ta na na na of Malgudi days. I sometimes feel the children of the current times are missing on so many of these things which will later serve as nostalgic memories. Great post. Keep the good work going.

Oh, my God, Rakhi, I could relate to so many of your memories. My grandmom used to wear glass bangles, there was a kulfi vendor and a aam vendor who would come every afternoon during summers and I would rush out to buy those. These were my summer vaction memories at my grandparents home. Also, I remember I was maybe in primary school and we would visit one of dad’s aunt every weekend and she used to stay by the railway tracks and I would run out to watch the train pass on hearing its whistles. You surely made me nostalgic. And you rightly said, 80’s kids will relate to all such memories.

Every kids from the 90s era will resonate with this post, I was reading and kind of visualizing all these sounds. Coming from Norther part of the country, Uttar Pradesh, one more peculiar sound was an essential part of my childhood journey. Chat vendor (chal thele waale bhaiya) he would beat the laddle on the tawa in a rythematic manner, at the entire society would know he is coming 😉
